From the start, Andy Windsor (Deeside) attacked and was joined by Duncan Hewitt (Nat Clarion) and Jimmy Froggatt (Wills Wheels). By Caernarfon (3m), they had a lead of 37 sec that grew to 1:50 at Llanaelhearn 14m. The bunch started to stir and reduced their lead To 1:05 at Pwllheli 21m. At Criccieth 32m, the front three were caught and another 9 Riders attacked immediately. These were Keith Jones (Deeside Oly), Will Wright (Wills Wheels), Nigel Williams (Python Rt) Warren Jessee (Cycleweb), Andy Martin (Deeside), Richard Cartland (Cycleweb), Norman Hughes (Deeside), Steve Hulme (Team Velocity) and Steven Richards (Vc Meudon).

By the time they arrived at the KOM at the top of the Nant Gwynant Pass, they had a lead of 1.41. By Capel Curig, 55m the lead was down to 1.04. Along the A5 towards Bethesda, Steve Richards attacked at Ogwen Bank 60m, but didn't get far. At this point the bunch was closing down rapidly on the long descent but as soon as the leaders started the climb of Mynydd Llandegai, Andrew Martin and Warren Jessee were dropped.

Over the top of the long climb, Norman Hughes and Nigel Williams made their winning move, chased by Steve Hulme and Keith Jones. There was some regrouping behind and the two chasers were reeled in by Caernarfon. Back along the road to Bethel, the two leaders had a gap of 55sec, and on the final descent back to Felinheli, Chris Anelay made a last minute attempt to get over to the leading pair And Failing By 30secs as the front two sprinted for the line in front of a massive crowd of supporters, with Nigel Williams just getting the winning verdict.
