North West Region Cheshire 14 Road Race Series - Race 2

Tuesday 11th May 2004

With a big improvement in weather conditions, from the previous week, the second race of the Cheshire 14 Road Race Series provided more accolades for Deeside Olympic.

An extra lap was added, from last week, taking the distance up to 30 miles on the flat Lower Withington circuit. As well as the distance going up so did the pace.

The Seniors race were completing the five mile lap in under 13 minutes, averaging 25mph for the distance. With plenty of attacks from different riders keeping the group on it's toes and the speed high. No rider was strong enough to pull away and no-one wanted to work to much so the group stayed together, setting up a bunch sprint. In a very tight finish Alan Broadbent took second place with myself getting forced in to the gutter lucky to stay upright, finishing in the bunch.

The 40-49 race followed a similar pattern with riders chancing attacks throughout the distance. Scottie (Gordon Wallace) attacked several times stretching the field. On the final lap, he and two other riders, broke away from the bunch. As they entered the finish straight Scottie positioned himself perfectly and took the sprint for another Deeside win. Keith Jones, Malcolm Ridgway, Marcus Fluegge and Mike Jones all finished in the main bunch.

In the 50+ race Sam Roberts and Ken Clarke completed the distance well placed in the main bunch.

Thanks to Ian Edwards for this report.
