North West Region Cheshire 14 Road Race Series - Race 1

Tuesday 4th May 2004

Tuesday saw the first race in the TLI Cheshire 14 Road Race Series. Deeside Olympic Veeboard were once again well represented in the first round with a fine turn out of 10 riders despite the bad weather.

As the rain clouds gathered and the light worsened the races got underway. The heavy rain held off until the last 10 miles or so, which made for some interesting racing, especially down the narrow lanes along the back stretch of the course. A horse and rider, some what startled by a couple of dozen cyclists speeding around a corner past them, nearly caused a major incident on the last lap but all the riders got passed one way or another. Unfortunately for Sam that meant a detour off the racing line and over the grass verge!

The senior race was won by Alan Broadbent Deeside Olympic with Ian (the sprinter) Edwards getting 3rd place. Also finishing in the main field were Richard and Mike Hughes.

In the 40-49 race, the race was won by Keith Jones with Gordon Wallace in 5th, Mike Jones, Marcus Flugge and Malcolm Ridgway in the main bunch.

In the 50+ race Deeside had two finishers with Ken Clarke and Sam Roberts finishing in the main bunch.

Thanks to Keith Jones for this report.
