John Boote Memorial Road Race

Saturday 3rd July 2004

Me, Andy Windsor and Simon Oliver rode this race which involved 18 times up a very steep climb. After messing up last week I was determined to do a good ride in this race. 15 miles into the race a break got going with plenty of strong riders including Andy. Knowing this move was going to stay I waited to the hardest bit on a long drag and jumped across. There were about 10 in the group and even though everybody was riding we never got more than 40 seconds on a chasing group of about 20.

With about 35 miles left they had us at 15 seconds, luckily I and 3 other rider in the group were feeling good and we hammered it for the next 10 miles which split the group down to 5 but extended our lead to 1 minute over the chasing group. Going into the last 7 miles I was with Annerley and some lad from a French team, at this point I didn’t know they were mates but I found out soon enough. They took it in turns attacking me all the way to the finish the lad from the French team blew but Annerley got away from me as I had spent the last 15 minutes chasing after the pair of them.

Annerley got a bit of pay back for the team working him over twice this year. So finally my form is coming back and hopefully I will get some wins over the next few races.
