49 riders line up for the start of this 64 mile 1/2/3/4 & W category event, covering 7 laps of the Denbigh/ Llandyrnog/ Bodfari/ Denbigh circuit.

The first 9 mile lap was covered in 21 minutes and Norman Hughes from Deeside Olympic set the scene for the rest of the race by taking the 1st prime on lap 2 at Llandyrnog. Lap 3 saw a break consisting of Hughes, Jeff Vernon Birkenhead North End CC, Jeff Capper Cyclestore.co.uk, Chris Anelay Triangle RT, Richard Jones Energy Cycles, Alistair Rutherford and Jimmy Froggatt both Wills Wheels CC move away from the bunch with the prime being taken by Anelay.

Even though efforts were being made back in the bunch, the break was steadily increasing it’s lead to 2 minutes when Hughes took the 3rd prime on lap4 and 3 min 30 secs when Hughes again took the prime on lap 5. This time Hughes did not ease up for his break away companions, but with nearly 3 laps to go he put the hammer down and soloed to the finish to a deserved win.

Froggatt was dropped from the break but hung on to finish 7th. The other 5 breakaways chased Hughes but finished 1 minute behind him, Vernon winning a closely fought sprint for 2nd place from Capper.
