Birdwell Wheelers Danum Trophy

Sunday 21st March 2004

Andrew Martin, Andy Windsor and Simon Oliver rode the Danum Trophy over 10x6 mile laps of a tough circuit in very high winds, which got stronger as the race went on.

Not fancying riding round in a 100 man bunch in the conditions Andy Martin was keen to get away early. After several attacks a group of 7 went clear including Wayne Randle. Andy a group of 6 to chase them down, three decided they weren't going to work, so the others had to ride a lot harder than they would have liked, to get up to Randle's group.

It took three laps to make contact, and as expected Randle attacked straight away. After pulling faces and chewing his bars for another mile Andy got up to him again, which made five in front.

It stayed this way until, with one lap to go, Randle took off on the climb when. All the hard riding earlier in the race had taken it's toll on Andys' legs and Randle pulled away.

Andy ended up finishing 4th with a pair of very smashed legs.
