WCTTA 25 Broxton D25/1

Sunday 3rd April 2005

Myself, big brother Chris Hughes and Alan Connor rode the above event on what turned out to be a tough, cold morning.

Alan was off number 2 finishing with a time of 1.01.11. I was off number 10 and soon settled into my rhythm thanks to a tailwind down to Broughton Heath island. The next 12 miles to Hampton Heath island were spent grovelling into headwind sometimes down to 19mph with the last 5 miles a total opposite sometimes clocking 37mph! I recorded a time of 56.20 which turned out to be good enough to win the event some 1.38 faster than the 2nd placed rider Steve Hankey.

Chris Hughes in only his 2nd time trial was off number 39, he returned to the car park after finishing the event with a facial expression that spelt dissaster, when asked how he got on the reply was quiet ammusing. After warming up on the turbo he dismounted and set about removing his bike only to get the spokes of the rear wheel caught up in the gubbings of the turbo. After some grunts, groans and a few swear words he eventually managed to free his bike and rode to the start! Passing the start he saw number 35 waiting to go so he rode down the road. When he returned to the time keeper he was told that he was 30 seconds late and to get on his way! Late Start!! He eventually clocked a creditable 1.04.59 which gained him a placing in the top 20 and he even said he still enjoyed the event!!!

Thanks to Norman Hughes for this report
