Recycling League -Byley

Sunday 15th August 2005

Me Andy Windsor, John Skates and Lloydie rode the recycling event at Byley yesterday and as I hadn’t raced for 5 weeks I wasn’t complaining about the circuit been pan flat. There were a few decent riders in the race and I thought something would go early. In fact before the flag got pulled in riders went, Lloydie went after the first attack which came back and after a bit of jumping a move went, as we had all missed it we needed to get across.

Andy went with Turnball and was making his way across when Matt Ellis jumped and I went after him, we caught Andy then after missing a few turns Turnball ripped through and I had to sprint to get his wheel, this dropped and Andy and Ellis but we got on to the break. Next to come across was Will Wright and that made a group of 11. Most of the group rode hard (unfortunately we had the usual ticket collectors and as I couldn’t be bothered with the excuses I left them there) we built a 2 minute lead.

Going into the last 10 miles the attacks started with Will eventually going clear. The group split to 6 and I put in a big effort to close the gap to about 10 meters when I flicked over everyone stayed on my wheel except for Ste Stoneman who flicked across the gap and sat on Will who was steaming into the finish. We were left sprinting for 3rd from which I got 3rd and 5th in the race. All the others came in the bunch.

P.S. For future reference anyone who reads this and they get in a break with me and you are not going to work just speak the truth and say “I am not coming through as I can’t be bothered and I would like you to tow me round all day so I can sprint past you at the end.” Rather than some of the crap you hear like “I would come through but I am too old”, “I would come through but I am too young”, “I would come through but its too hilly”, “I would…too Flat” etc. and the absolute class “My legs are hurting” and mine don’t!

Thanks to Andy Martin for this report
