John May Memorial Road Race

Sunday 8th May 2005

Me and Andy Windsor went over to Wakefield on Sunday to ride the John May Mem. The circuit was grippy with 2 climbs and 1 main road drag each lap to be ridden 12 times which was made just a little bit harder with a very strong wind blowing.

Soon as the flag was pulled in the attacks started and it was lined out straight away, after about 5 miles I rode up to Andy to say something was going to go early in this wind and with that Wayne Randle went off the front. Forgetting the several kicking’s I received from him last year I jumped after him with 2 riders on my wheel. Once I got up to Wayne the other 2 couldn’t help much and it was just the 2 of us riding, to say I wasn’t looking forward to 70 miles of riding in the wind with Wayne was an understatement. After about 10 miles 2 more riders came across and that made 6 and now everyone in the group rode.

With about 25 miles left a group of 15 got to within 20 seconds of us when Wayne gave it full gas up a climb, this dropped 2 of our group straight away and I went from seeing 1 back wheel in his bike to about 5. We kept it flat out for a lap and this put the gap back over 1 minute then we just rode to the finish. We started sprinting about 300m from the top of the climb where the finish was and my sprint ended about 2 seconds after it started due to having zero effort left in my legs. I finished 4th of 4.

Thanks to Andy Martin for this report
