CHESHIRE ROAD RACE SERIES No.1 – EVENT 4 Lr Worleston Circuit

Tuesday 31st May 2005

Deeside were well represented with Keith, Gordon, Mick, Malcolm, Marcus, Twin A and myself, with Sam performing her marshalling duties this week, on the sporting Worleston circuit.

Because of a reduced entry this week both the 40's and under where combined with the 40 to 50's, which always makes for an interesting race.

The first lap was relatively sedate with the odd attack getting pulled back and no break being allowed to form. On the second time up the hill Keith made a move with two other riders and looked like he had got away. Scotty, Mal, Mick and myself moved to the front of the bunch to try and control the pace and let Keith get away. But the break fell apart before the end of the lap and Keith came back into the main bunch.

The last lap and it all went off again on the climb. I was left out of the main bunch and had to chase hard to get back on. It took me three attempts and two miles to get back on. I recovered and Keith suggested we give Mick a “Fasa style” lead out for the inevitable bunch gallop, so we tried to move up to the front of the bunch but on such a narrow course and with Keith being tightly marked we failed to move him into a good sprinting position (maybe next time Mick!).

The finishing stretch is narrow, twisty and very rough in places, until it opens up into a long straight with the line about 600 yards from the last corner. The gallop started early and both Scotty and Mick seemed to get into decent positions behind the leaders and attacked the line amongst the leaders. As legs started to blow some gaps opened up in front of me, so I went as hard on the pedals as I could and finished quite well placed at the front of the sprint but with riders ahead of me at the line. Everyone from Deeside finished in the main bunch and you could of covered the top twenty with a blanket.

As it turned out I was the first under 40 across the line and took first place in my race! I never waited for the result and only found out when Scotty picked the prize (while he picked his winnings for finishing second in the under 50's) up and handed it to me afterwards.

Thanks to Ian Edwards for this report
