Brenig Road Race

Sunday 15th May 2005

On the warmest day of the year so far, the Deeside was represented by Stephen Lloyd, Keith Jones, Andrew Windsor, Stephen Bradbrook, John Skates and myself in the annual Brenig Road Race.

The neutralised section out of Denbigh was probably one of the fastest I Have ever ridden! Bearing this in mind it was time to recover a bit once the flag was dropped. As we turned up to Bylchau I increased the pace and eased away off the front of the bunch and was joined by Chris Anelay (Traingle - Bianchi), Dale Appleby (Team Fuji Bikes UK), Simon Bridge (Leigh Premier RC) and Graham Sumner (GB Fire Service). The five of us then worked well together and by Cerrig Y Drudion we had a lead of 1 minute.

At the start of the finishing circuit of Llandyrnog, our lead had increased to 1 minute 50 seconds. On the second lap between Denbigh and Llandyrnog I came through to do my turn at the front, noticing I had opened up a small gap I increased my pace and was quickly joined by Chris Anelay. The two of us then gave it some serious effort and soon opened up a sizeable gap. A time check on the final lap at the Llandyrnog roundabout gave us a lead of 1 minute 30 seconds back to a group of thirteen riders which included the three riders that were in the original break. Both Chris and I knew that it was going to end in a sprint finish as neither of us had the legs to ride away to a solo victory. As we turned the corner into the finishing straight we rode side by side, with about 150 metres to go I jumped hard and immediately opened up a small gap and took the victory.
